The Anoushka Shankar Project was created in 2006 in response to the need for Anoushka to present and perform her experimental creations. After her fourth solo album "Rise," Anoushka toured for a year worldwide with a large ensemble comprising of Indian and Western, acoustic and electronic instruments, to better reflect the multicultural nature of that groundbreaking album. After "Rise," Anoushka wanted to maintain a clear distinction between her experimental work and her classical Indian concerts, and therefore streamlined her "Rise" ensemble to create The Anoushka Shankar Project.
While the exact lineup of The Anoushka Shankar Project goes through occasional modifications, it tends to be an acoustic, instrumental ensemble comprising of contrasting instruments such as sitar and piano, or bansuri flute and cello. The music they play explores the commonalities between the North and South Indian musical traditions, and makes further connections between these styles and Western elements such as flamenco and jazz. Anoushka believes in the timelessness and relevance of the ancient, classical Indian musical styles, and with this ensemble of brilliant and versatile musicians, Anoushka can push forward the Indian classical parameters, and create a sensitively global, timeless sound. |
